Virgin Australia to Launch Direct Canberra–Bali Flights in June 2026
Virgin Australia will launch direct flights between Canberra and Bali from 22 June 2026, giving travellers from the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding regions a non-stop option to reach Denpasar instead of connecting through Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or another Australian city.
The airline says the new Canberra–Bali route will operate three return services per week and add more than 40,000 seats per year between Australia’s capital and Bali. Flights are planned on Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with Business, Economy and Economy X seating available.
What is changing for travellers?
The main practical change is convenience. Canberra-based Bali visitors will be able to fly directly to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar, reducing the need for a domestic connection before the international leg.
Virgin Australia says the schedule has been designed with afternoon departures from Canberra and overnight returns from Bali. The route is described as seasonal, operating from April to January, although the first service is scheduled for 22 June 2026. The airline has also said frequency may increase during peak travel periods, but travellers should check live schedules before making plans.
Who benefits most?
The route is most useful for travellers based in Canberra, the ACT, southern New South Wales and nearby regional areas who are planning Bali holidays, family trips, surf trips or longer stays in Indonesia. It may also add useful competition and capacity during Australia’s winter travel season, when Bali demand is high.
For travellers elsewhere in Australia, the change is less direct, but it adds to Virgin Australia’s existing Bali network from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Same-day domestic connections may be available depending on the final schedule and booking conditions.
Fares and booking caveats
Virgin Australia’s launch announcement listed introductory return fares from AUD 399 in Economy Lite, AUD 499 in Economy Choice and AUD 1,449 in Business for selected travel dates. Those sale fares were limited and may no longer be available. Travellers should treat them as launch-announcement pricing, not as a guaranteed current fare.
As with most airline sales, availability can vary by date, fare class, baggage needs, payment charges and peak-period demand. Economy Lite fares may not include checked baggage or flexibility, so Bali travellers carrying surfboards, diving gear or larger luggage should compare the total trip cost rather than the headline fare alone.
Before flying to Bali
Australians travelling to Indonesia should check current entry requirements before booking and again before departure. Indonesia’s official eVisa website provides visa application and tracking tools, including Electronic Visa on Arrival options for eligible travellers. The site also states that travellers are required to submit an arrival card within three days before arrival in Indonesia.
Bali also has an international tourist levy, currently listed by the official Love Bali platform as IDR 150,000. Travellers should use official Indonesian government or Bali provincial government websites and be cautious of lookalike third-party payment pages.
Passengers should also confirm passport validity, visa conditions, onward-ticket requirements, airline baggage rules and any airport-specific instructions before travelling. Entry and fee rules can change, and airline route schedules can be adjusted after launch.
Why this matters for Bali travel planning
This is a practical route-development story rather than a general tourism announcement. A direct Canberra–Bali service can shorten itineraries, reduce connection risk and expand seat availability for one of Indonesia’s busiest visitor markets. For Bali-bound travellers in the ACT region, it may make short holidays and family trips easier to plan, especially during Australian school holidays and winter escape periods.
