How to Get from Sungai Nibong to Tanah Rata

The bus is the practical public transport link from Penang to the Cameron Highlands. Unititi Express runs buses to Tanah Rata, the main Cameron Highlands base, from Penang's Sungai Nibong terminal on the island, as well as from Komtar and Penang Sentral.^[1] Tanah Rata has guesthouses, cafes, tour desks and hiking routes.

Sungai Nibong to Tanah Rata by Bus

Fares start at RM40, and departures run from around 08:00 to 13:15.^[1] The journey usually takes around 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions, and longer at weekends, on public holidays or in bad weather.^[1] The bus arrives at the Tanah Rata bus terminal (Terminal Freesia).^[1]

The road climbs from the coast into winding hill roads, so travellers who get carsick should choose their seat carefully, avoid heavy meals before departure and keep water handy. Do not schedule a paid tour right after arrival, because delays are common on this road.

Departing from Sungai Nibong

Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal is on Penang Island, while Penang Sentral is in Butterworth on the mainland, and arrivals from other cities may use either.^[2] If you are staying in George Town or Batu Ferringhi, add local transfer time before the bus leaves.
