Cathay Pacific Raises Fuel Surcharge on Hong Kong–South Asia Flights From August 1

Cathay Pacific will increase the fuel surcharge for Cathay-operated flights between Hong Kong and the South Asian subcontinent from 1 August 2026. The change is a regional fare adjustment, not an India-only rule: it applies to the airline's South Asian route group, including Hong Kong connections used for trips to India and Sri Lanka.

The surcharge will rise from HK$448 to HK$633 per flight sector. Cathay lists equivalent amounts of US$81.20, CAD114.50 and NZ$140 for this route group, although the currency shown on a ticket can vary by point of sale.

The airline says the charge is included on all Cathay Pacific tickets and is applied per sector regardless of fare type. It also says the applicable surcharge is determined by where a journey begins, so travellers should check the fare and tax breakdown for their own itinerary rather than assume the Hong Kong rate applies in both directions.

Fuel prices prompted the change

Cathay said the adjustment follows a recent rise in jet-fuel prices amid escalating Middle East tensions. It is the airline's first passenger fuel-surcharge increase since April, after several reductions since May; Cathay says the new charge remains below its April peak.

For passengers using Hong Kong as a hub for South Asia, the increase can add to the total cost of a booking with a Cathay-operated regional sector. Cathay sells direct flights between Colombo and Hong Kong as well as routes to India, making the change directly relevant to itineraries involving either destination. The surcharge is already included in fares quoted through Cathay's direct booking channels, but comparing the full price remains useful when choosing dates, cabins or connecting routes.

Cathay reviews and may revise its fuel surcharges every two weeks. The HK$633 figure is therefore the rate announced for travel from 1 August, not necessarily a fixed charge for later bookings or departures.
