Badulla is the regional capital of Uva Province and the end of the Main Line railway. Ella, 20.81 km down the line, is the heart of the tea country, famous for hiking trails and cafe culture.[1] The short trip is less about distance than about the scenery of the Uva highlands.
The railway section is best known for the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella and the Demodara Loop, where the track curves back and passes under itself. You can take the train or a private car.
Badulla to Ella by Train
The train is the most popular way to make this trip. Sri Lanka Railways runs the line between Colombo Fort and Badulla, and lists a Kandy to Badulla slow train with an observation saloon.[2] Train services between Badulla and Nanu Oya, which includes Ella, resumed in June 2026 after cyclone repairs.[3] Booking platforms list the ride at about 50 minutes (October 2026).[4] Because Badulla is the starting station of services toward Colombo, you can board before the crowds join further up the line.

The official fare from Badulla to Ella is LKR 250 in first class, LKR 150 in second class and LKR 60 in third class.[1] Reserved seats can be booked online up to 30 days ahead, and reservations are worthwhile because trains toward Kandy and Colombo get crowded.[5]
Badulla to Ella by Private Transfer
With heavy luggage, or if you want to reach your guesthouse in Ella without walking up from the station, a private transfer is the most direct method. A standard car is listed at about $33 per vehicle and about 35 minutes (October 2026).[4] The driver can drop you at your accommodation and stop at a viewpoint or fruit stall on the way.
