Leaving Colombo for the hill country of Ella is a rite of passage for anyone exploring Sri Lanka. The route climbs from the coastal lowlands to the tea highlands, where Ella offers the Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock and a much slower pace. You can go by train, bus, van or private car.
Colombo to Ella by Train
The famous main line runs from Colombo Fort through Kandy to Badulla, with Ella on the way. Sri Lanka Railways lists intercity and express trains on Colombo Fort to Badulla, with first, second and third class and an observation saloon on some services.[1] Ella is 271.59 km from Colombo Fort. The fare from Colombo Fort to Ella is LKR 1,750 in first class, LKR 900 in second class and LKR 440 in third class.[2]
The line was damaged by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025 and reopened in stages. Train services between Badulla and Nanu Oya resumed in June 2026.[3] In October 2026 the railway's timetable page was temporarily unavailable,[4] so use the railway's seat reservation site to see which trains run on your day.
Colombo to Ella by Bus
Buses are the most economical road option. The booking platform 12Go lists an air-conditioned large coach (10:15 and 17:15) and an express service (10:15), at about $8 to $12 and a travel time of 4 hours to 4 hours 45 minutes (October 2026).[5] Buses are popular, so it is wise to secure your seat in advance.
Colombo to Ella by Van
Vans and minibuses sit between the public bus and a private transfer. Listed services combine different legs, such as a van and minibus or a van, bus and van relay, and depart at 06:30, 09:00, 13:00 or 16:00 depending on the service. They cost about $19 to $26 and take 5 to 6 hours.[5]
Colombo to Ella by Private Transfer

Tips for Traveling from Colombo to Ella
- Book Ahead: In peak season (December to March), transport to Ella fills up quickly. Booking your train seat, bus or private car in advance avoids waiting in the Colombo heat.
