Day train  Thailand

Take an SRT train from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. The 64 km to Ayutthaya take 48 minutes to 1 hour 17 minutes on the express, rapid and railcar trains, and a seat costs 44 to 261 baht depending on the train.[1] The cheapest option is an ordinary train from Hua Lamphong: 15 baht for the 71 km, about 1 hour 30 to 2 hours.[2]

There is no sleeper to book for this hop. Overnight trains such as 9, 13, 23 and 25 also call at Ayutthaya in the evening, but a day trip works better on the daytime seat trains.[1]

Which train to take

For the quickest ride, take an air-conditioned service from Krung Thep Aphiwat: train 21 at 06:10, Special Express 7 at 07:30, railcar express 75 at 08:45 or railcar express 71 at 10:35. All four reach Ayutthaya in under an hour.[1] They continue to Ubon Ratchathani (21, 71), Chiang Mai (7) and Nong Khai (75).[1]

For the cheapest daytime seat, take rapid train 135 at 07:10 or 111 at 07:50 with fan-cooled coaches. On train 135 third class costs 44 baht and second class 61 baht.[3] Train 135 needs 1 hour 17 minutes.[1]

Three air-conditioned suburban railcars, 9001 at 05:15, 9003 at 09:05 and 9005 at 18:15, run Monday to Friday only.[4] SRT lists them at 30 or 50 baht depending on the distance, with 1 hour 15 minutes to Ayutthaya.[1]

Going back to Bangkok

The afternoon and evening trains from Ayutthaya to Krung Thep Aphiwat leave at 13:57 (72), 14:24 (76), 16:04 (112), 16:50 (8), 16:55 (136), 18:59 (102) and 21:22 (22). The suburban railcars 9004 at 14:40 and 9006 at 19:45 also appear in the search.[5] The last train listed is 22, due in Bangkok at 22:15.[5]

To Hua Lamphong, ordinary trains leave Ayutthaya at 08:18 (208), 10:11 (212), 11:55 (202), 12:52 (234) and 18:21 (210).[6]

Which Bangkok station

Express, rapid and railcar trains to the north and northeast start at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Bang Sue, where SRT lists connections to the MRT Blue Line and the Red Lines.[1] Hua Lamphong, the old terminal, still sends out ordinary and suburban third class trains: 303 at 04:15, 201 at 10:15, 209 at 11:15, 233 at 12:00, 211 at 12:55, 207 at 14:20 and 301 at 16:45.[2] Trains 339, 317 and 313 run on government working days only.[4]

Trains 75 and 135 also stop at Don Mueang, which SRT marks as the Don Mueang airport station, and at Rangsit, so you can board there if you are staying near the airport.[7]

Classes and fares

On railcar expresses 71 and 75, air-conditioned second class seats cost 241 baht and fan-cooled third class seats 164 baht from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Ayutthaya. SRT notes that the price can change with the coach actually attached on the day.[7] Trains 21 and 7 are listed at 261 baht.[1] Rapid trains like 135 have fan-cooled second class (61 baht) and third class (44 baht) seats, with toilets listed on board.[3]

Children taller than 100 cm and up to 150 cm pay half the fare, fees excluded.[8]

How to book

Special express, express and rapid trains have reserved seats. You can buy tickets on the SRT D-Ticket website or app, at stations nationwide, or by phone on 1690, which answers every day around the clock.[8] A ride this short covers less than 25 percent of these trains' routes, so SRT allows booking only 1 day ahead.[8] Reserved tickets carry the passenger's name and ID or passport number, and the name cannot be changed or the ticket passed to someone else.[8]

Ordinary, suburban and local trains have free seating. Tickets for them are sold on the day of travel, no earlier than 2 hours before departure.[8]

Arriving in Ayutthaya

The station is on the east side of the Pa Sak River, so the old city island is a short ferry or tuk-tuk ride from the platform. Check the train number on your ticket against the station display before boarding, because several of these services run on to cities far beyond Ayutthaya.
