Osaka to Nara by Train: Kintetsu or JR

Take the Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara, the station closest to Nara Park. JR Yamatoji Rapid and the limited express MAHOROBA go to JR Nara.

Take the Kintetsu Nara Line from Osaka-Namba if you are going to Nara Park and Todaiji: Kintetsu-Nara station is the closer of Nara's two stations. Nara Park is about 8 minutes on foot from Kintetsu-Nara and about 20 minutes from JR Nara.[1] The Kintetsu direct service from Osaka-Namba takes about 40 minutes, the JR Yamatoji Rapid from Osaka station about 50 minutes and from Tennoji about 36.[2]

JR West also runs the limited express MAHOROBA from Osaka and Shin-Osaka to Nara. It runs on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, with extra weekday runs on 2, 4 to 6 and 9 to 13 November 2026.[3]

Which train to take

Kintetsu Rapid Express and Express. These run from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara and need only a normal fare, with no seat reservation. In the weekday timetable the Rapid Express leaves Kintetsu-Nara at 05:18 and reaches Osaka-Namba at 05:55, calling at Shin-Omiya, Yamato-Saidaiji, Gakuemmae, Ikoma, Tsuruhashi, Osaka-Uehommachi and Kintetsu-Nippombashi.[4] Through the day the timetable shows a Rapid Express and an Express roughly every 20 minutes each.[5]

Kintetsu limited express. Limited express trains on the Kintetsu network have reserved seats only and need a limited express charge on top of the basic fare.[6] On the Namba to Nara run the gain is small because the ordinary trains are already direct.

JR Yamatoji Rapid. This runs from JR Namba, Tennoji or Osaka to JR Nara without a change. It is the natural choice when you start near Osaka station or Tennoji, or use a JR pass. Departure times are shown in the JR West route search for your date.

MAHOROBA. This all-reserved limited express links Osaka, Shin-Osaka, Horyuji and Nara via the Osaka Higashi Line, in about an hour between Osaka and Nara.[3] On weekends and holidays the regular train leaves Osaka at 09:58 and reaches Nara at 10:57. The return from Nara leaves at 16:21 and reaches Osaka at 17:15. Extra trains run at 14:15 from Osaka and 12:21 from Nara, and on the November weekday dates a train leaves Osaka at 09:04 and Nara at 14:20.[7]

Fares and tickets

A MAHOROBA ticket needs your ordinary ticket plus the limited express charge. The charge is 1,730 yen for a reserved seat in the normal season, or 860 yen if you buy the ticketless version on JR West's e5489 site with a credit card.[8] On Kintetsu the basic fare from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara is 680 yen, and a limited express adds a charge of 520 yen.[9] The JR fare is not listed here; the JR West route search shows it for your journey.

For Kintetsu limited express you can buy the charge online or at a ticket counter or machine in major stations, and you also need a basic fare ticket, which can be an IC card.[10] IC cards such as Suica and ICOCA work on both the Kintetsu and JR lines, but rail passes are restricted to their own operator.[11]

The two stations

Kintetsu-Nara sits at the western edge of Nara Park. JR Nara is further west, so on foot it is the longer walk to Todaiji, though a city loop bus runs from both stations to the main sights.[2]

  • Staying around Namba or Tennoji and heading for the park: Kintetsu Rapid Express from Osaka-Namba.
  • Arriving by Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka on a weekend: MAHOROBA, with no change to Nara.
  • Holding a JR pass: Yamatoji Rapid to JR Nara.
