Leaving behind the poetic mist of West Lake for the high-octane energy of the Pearl River Delta marks a transition from China's classical beauty to its modern industrial heart. While Hangzhou is the city of scholars and silk, Guangzhou is a sprawling megacity defined by its world-class dim sum and a skyline that glitters with the neon of the Canton Tower. The journey cuts through the lush landscapes of southeastern China.

For travelers, the choice between these two cities often comes down to a classic debate: the speed of the sky versus the comfort of the rails. Both are incredibly efficient in China, but they offer very different perspectives on the changing terrain.

Hangzhou to Guangzhou by Train

China's high speed rail network is legendary, and the line connecting Hangzhou to Guangzhou is no exception. High Speed Day Trains

The daytime high-speed trains are perfect for those who want to see the Chinese countryside flash by at 300km/h. You can choose between Second Class, First Class or Business Class. A Second Class seat costs 696 to 887 yuan depending on the train and the arrival station, First Class 1,113 to 1,320 yuan and Business Class 2,295 to 2,886 yuan.[1] Business class passengers get a free meal at mealtimes, and large stations in provincial capitals have separate business-class waiting areas.[2] Standing tickets cost the same as a Second Class seat, but they are no fun on a journey of this length. You can easily check availability and book these seats on GoAsia.cc to ensure you get your preferred class.

Overnight Trains

The overnight D trains are a way to save on a night of accommodation. The D169 leaves Hangzhou South at 15:40 and reaches Guangzhou Baiyun at 05:36 (13 hours 56 minutes), and the D99 leaves Hangzhou East at 19:18 and arrives at Guangzhou Baiyun at 09:45 (14 hours 27 minutes).
