Kunming to Luang Prabang by Train

Four international passenger trains a day connect Kunming with Vientiane, and they stop at Luang Prabang. Services start at Kunming South station or at Kunming station, and the whole Kunming-Vientiane run takes about 10 hours including border clearance. Departures from Kunming leave in the morning, around 08:08 from Kunming South and 10:55 from Kunming station.[1][2]

Between Kunming and Luang Prabang the ride takes about 8 hours or more. Tickets are sold in second class and first class, and on booking platforms they start at about $61 for second class and reach about $96 for the best seats (October 2026). Second class has the cheaper, comfortable seats; first class gives you more space for the long day.[2]

Immigration and customs are handled at the border stations, Mohan on the Chinese side and Boten on the Laotian side. The stop is already counted in the travel time.[1] Cross-border tickets are only sold against a valid passport, so have the original with you when you pick up your paper ticket and when you board.[3]

Tips for Traveling from Kunming to Luang Prabang

  • Tickets: Cross-border tickets for trains starting in China go on sale 15 days ahead on the China Railway 12306 website and at the international ticket windows in Kunming, Kunming South, Yuxi, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna and Mohan. Exchange the booking for a paper ticket at one of those stations before you travel.[3]
  • Visa: Confirm that your passport and your Lao visa are valid before you board.[3]
  • Luggage: Each adult may carry 20 kg, and no single item may be longer than 130 cm in length, width and height combined.[3]
  • Refunds and changes: You can change the date, train or seat class once before departure, and a refund before departure costs 20 percent of the fare.[3]
  • Currency: Kunming uses Chinese yuan (CNY), Luang Prabang the Lao kip (LAK).
