While Shanghai represents the pinnacle of China's futuristic urban ambition, Zhangjiajie is a prehistoric landscape often linked to the floating peaks of the movie Avatar. This journey takes you from the eastern coast deep into the heart of Hunan Province, from a global financial hub to a UNESCO World Heritage area dominated by more than 3,000 narrow sandstone pillars and peaks.[1]
Whether you choose to fly or race across central China on a high-speed rail line, the transition is dramatic. Shanghai to Zhangjiajie by Flight
Flying is the fastest way to bridge the gap between these two destinations, and it lets you spend your morning in Shanghai and your afternoon near the national park. Flights typically depart from either Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and arrive at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). Airlines set their own fares and schedules, so check the carriers' sites for current times and prices; fares can rise sharply during peak periods like the Golden Week holiday.

Shanghai to Zhangjiajie by Train

There is also a slower overnight train, K1373, which leaves Shanghai Songjiang at 16:34 and reaches Zhangjiajie station at 11:58 the next day, a journey of 19 hours 24 minutes, with soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat tickets.[3]
Standing tickets are not recommended for a journey of seven to nine hours unless you are prepared for a very tiring trip. Try to book a reserved seat well in advance, especially since Zhangjiajie is a major domestic tourism destination.

- Airport Transfers: In Shanghai, allow plenty of time to reach the airport. The maglev runs from Longyang Road station on Metro Line 2 to Pudong Airport in about 8 minutes.[5]
- Navigation: Download a translation app and an offline map. While Zhangjiajie is a major tourist spot, English is not as widely spoken there as it is in Shanghai.
