How to Get from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie

While Shanghai represents the pinnacle of China's futuristic urban ambition, Zhangjiajie is a prehistoric landscape often linked to the floating peaks of the movie Avatar. This journey takes you from the eastern coast deep into the heart of Hunan Province, from a global financial hub to a UNESCO World Heritage area dominated by more than 3,000 narrow sandstone pillars and peaks.^[1]

Shanghai to Zhangjiajie by Flight

Flying is the fastest way to bridge the gap between these two destinations, and it lets you spend your morning in Shanghai and your afternoon near the national park. Flights typically depart from either Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and arrive at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). Fares can rise sharply during peak periods like the Golden Week holiday.

Shanghai to Zhangjiajie by Train

The high-speed rail network in China is a marvel of modern engineering, and the route to Zhangjiajie is no exception. On 16 October 2026, three high-speed trains ran to Zhangjiajie West: G219 from Shanghai Hongqiao (07:04 to 14:19, 7 hours 15 minutes), G1471 from Shanghai South (12:12 to 20:46, 8 hours 34 minutes) and G1369 from Shanghai Hongqiao (12:44 to 21:55, 9 hours 11 minutes). Ticket Classes and Overnight Option

The high-speed trains sell business, first and second class seats, and standing tickets are also offered. Fares differ by train and seat class; search a date on the China Railway 12306 site to see them. There is also a slower overnight train, K1373, which leaves Shanghai Songjiang at 16:34 and reaches Zhangjiajie station at 11:58 the next day, a journey of 19 hours 24 minutes, with soft sleeper, hard sleeper and hard seat tickets.^[3]

Standing tickets are not recommended for a journey of seven to nine hours unless you are prepared for a very tiring trip. Try to book a reserved seat well in advance, especially since Zhangjiajie is a major domestic tourism destination.
