Manila's LRT-2 Runs 8 of 10 Trains, With Queues at Peak Hours
Manila's LRT-2 is running with only 8 of its 10 trains. On 15 October the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) reported 2 trains in maintenance and gaps of 12 to 15 minutes between trains.[1] LRTA applies crowd control at its two eastern stations when passenger volume is high.[1]
What the operator reports
- Fleet: 10 trains operational, 8 deployed and 2 undergoing maintenance (update of 15 October, 5:02 a.m.).[1]
- Interval between trains: 12 to 15 minutes.[1]
- Crowd control: when passenger volume is high, LRTA limits entry at Antipolo Station and Marikina-Pasig Station from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.[1]
Why service is reduced
On 9 October the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said LRTA reported no breakdowns, but the current ten trains are no longer enough because ridership has grown. At that time one train was being upgraded with a new Train Operating Control Panel and another was being repaired. DOTr is working to secure funding for more trainsets, which it expects to take at least three years to arrive.[2]
Possible bus alternative
DOTr has asked LRTA and the land transport regulator LTFRB to study special permits for buses on the LRT-2 route between Antipolo Station and Recto Station, with designated stops at LRT-2 stations. The study covers operating arrangements, franchising requirements and fares. It is a proposal under study, not a service that has started.[2]
What to do
If you plan to ride between Recto and Antipolo, avoid the morning rush at the eastern stations, allow extra time and check LRTA's latest operations update on the day. See our Manila guide for other ways to get around the city.
