No train runs the whole way, so a rail trip has two legs: a Coast Line train from Galle to Colombo, then a Main Line train from Colombo Fort towards Kandy. From Colombo Fort, Sri Lanka Railways publishes a fare of Rs 240 in third class, Rs 500 in second class and Rs 950 in first class to Galle, and the same fares to Kandy.[2] Trains between Colombo Fort and Peradeniya, 114.85 km from Colombo Fort, run again since 2 October 2026, but services between Peradeniya and Kandy stay suspended until the Peradeniya Black Bridge is restored.[3] For now you finish the last stretch by road, which is why most travelers prefer a private transfer.
