Leaving the chaotic neon glow of Bangkok for the dusty, French-colonial charm of Phnom Penh takes you across the heart of Mainland Southeast Asia. Both capitals share a deep Buddhist heritage and a love for street food, but the move from Thailand's polished skyscrapers to the saffron-robed monks walking past the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh is a real change of scene.
At the moment there is one way to do it: fly. The land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia, including Poipet and Aranyaprathet, are suspended, so buses, vans and private cars between the two capitals do not run across the border.[1] You can book flights for this route through GoAsia.cc.
Bangkok to Phnom Penh by Flight
A non-stop flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes, so you spend more time at the airport than in the air.[2][3] Both of Bangkok's airports have direct flights.
Flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)
Bangkok Airways flies direct from Suvarnabhumi to Phnom Penh in about 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes.[3] This is the airport to pick for full-service flights and for connections from other international routes.
Flights from Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air fly direct from Don Mueang in about 1 hour 10 to 15 minutes. Sample one-way fares on Thai AirAsia start at 2,324 baht (about $69) for dates in October and November 2026.[2] Don Mueang is often easier for connections from domestic flights, for example from the islands or the north.
Landing in Phnom Penh
All Phnom Penh flights land at Techo International Airport (KTI), which took over every Phnom Penh airport operation on 9 September 2025.[4] The airport is about 20 km from the city centre, and the drive typically takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.[3] Arrange an authorized taxi, airport shuttle or hotel transfer from the arrivals hall.
Overland: Border Closed
Land borders and crossings between Cambodia and Thailand are suspended, and the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border.[5] Cambodia's official e-Visa site lists the Poipet crossing as temporarily closed for e-Visa entry until further notice.[6] Some bus companies still show Bangkok to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh tickets on their websites, so check the border status with an official source before you pay for any overland ticket.

Tips for Traveling from Bangkok to Phnom Penh
- Visa Requirements: Most nationalities need a visa for Cambodia. The tourist e-visa costs USD 30, allows a stay of 1 month and is processed in 3 business days, so apply online before you fly.[6] All travellers also submit the Cambodia e-Arrival form online, ideally within 7 days before arrival.[6]
- Currency: While the Cambodian Riel is the official currency, the US Dollar is used everywhere in Phnom Penh. ATMs dispense USD, but change for small purchases will often be given in Riel.
- Luggage: Check your airline's baggage allowance before you book, especially on low-cost carriers where checked bags cost extra.
