Siargao Island: Surfing, Island Hopping, and How to Plan Your Trip

Siargao's sights are spread across the island and its neighbours, so plan by location. The boardwalk, Daku Island and Guyam Island are in General Luna; Magpupungko is in Pilar; Sugba Lagoon is in Del Carmen; Sohoton Cove is in Socorro; and Pacifico's surf break is in San Isidro.^[1] Ask your accommodation or boat operator for the route and travel time to each.

On a first visit, pick one base and group what is nearby: surf and the General Luna area, an island outing, or a separate day for a farther municipality. If you want to combine Del Carmen, Pilar or Socorro with other stops, ask whether transfers and the return trip are included.

Cloud 9 and Surfing

Cloud 9 in General Luna is one of the fastest, trickiest and most dangerous surfing spots in the world, and the province calls itself the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines".^[2] International and national surfing competitions run here every year, usually in September and October.^[2] If you are learning, book a lesson with a local surf school and let the instructor choose a spot that suits the conditions that day.

The Cloud 9 Towers are being rebuilt. In April 2026 the Philippine Sports Commission, the General Luna local government and the Province of Surigao del Norte gave the restoration the go signal: a 3-storey watchtower and a 2-level viewing deck connected to the boardwalk, fast-tracked for the WSL QS6000 International Pro from 16 to 25 October 2026.^[3] Ask locally whether the tower and boardwalk are open before you make a special trip.

Island Outings and Other Stops

Daku is an island barangay next to Guyam, about 5 minutes by pumpboat from the Poblacion, and a good spot for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. Guyam is a small islet of powdery white sand with a cluster of coconut trees for shade.^[2] Sugba Lagoon is in Del Carmen.^[1] Before you book a boat, ask where the trip departs, which stops are included, when you are back, what happens if the weather turns, and whether the price is per boat or per person. Entrance, equipment and conservation charges can come on top.

Magpupungko is in Pilar and Sohoton Cove is in Socorro, so give each its own day.^[1] For Magpupungko, plan your visit around the tide. For Sohoton, ask the local operator about the route, transfers and swimming rules.

Pacifico's surf break is in San Isidro.^[1] If you want to surf outside General Luna, arrange local transport and a ride back before you set out.

Arriving and Choosing a Base

Siargao's main airport is Sayak Airport, also known as Siargao Airport.^[4] Check flights with the airlines and arrange your ride to the accommodation in advance, including the pickup point and the price.

General Luna is a practical base if your plans centre on the boardwalk and nearby island trips. If Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko or Sohoton come first, compare the starting point and return transfer of each trip before you choose where to stay.

If you come by sea from Surigao City to Dapa, check the carrier, port and departure time directly with the carrier before you book onward travel.

Weather, Water, and Timing

Sea trips and surf plans depend on conditions on the day. Check the PAGASA regional forecast for Surigao del Norte^[5] and the PAGASA gale warnings,^[6] then ask your boat operator or surf instructor. A warning for another sea area is not a Siargao warning, so read which areas the bulletin names.

Leave flexibility for weather changes and avoid a tight onward connection right after an excursion.

Plan Costs and Local Transport

Ask for a dated price breakdown of boat, admission, lesson, equipment and local rides. Check whether the quote is per person or per boat, the group limit, the stops and gear included, meals and cancellation terms.

A motorbike makes remote stops easier, and you can also arrange local rides or a transfer. Compare the options for your route and experience. Before you rent, check the price, the documents and insurance you need and what to do if plans change.
