Odawara is the main rail gateway to Hakone, and from here most travelers head to Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen or the Odakyu Line. Which one fits depends on where in Tokyo you are going and how much luggage you carry.
Odawara to Tokyo by Train
Hikari and Kodama trains run on the Tokaido Shinkansen from Odawara to Tokyo Station. The ride takes about 35 minutes, and local trains take longer.[1] An adult reserved seat in an ordinary car costs ¥3,610 in the regular season,[2] and a non-reserved seat costs ¥3,280.[3] Off-peak travel is ¥200 cheaper than the regular fare for a reserved seat, peak travel ¥200 more and super-peak travel ¥400 more.[2]
The Odakyu Line is the alternative if your destination is Shinjuku: Odawara is directly accessible from Shinjuku by the Odakyu Romancecar, and the trains toward Shinjuku leave from platforms 9 and 10.[4] The Limited Express Romancecar takes about 80 minutes between Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto, all seats are reserved and a limited express ticket of ¥1,200 is required on top of the regular fare.[5] Hakone-Yumoto lies beyond Odawara, so the ride from Odawara itself is shorter.
Odawara Station
The JR Tokaido Shinkansen ticket gate is at the West Exit on the 1st floor. The JR Tokaido Line gate and the shared Odakyu and Hakone Tozan Railway gates are on the 3rd floor.[4] If you arrive from Hakone by Hakone Tozan Railway or bus, leave enough time for the change and for buying a ticket.
If your baggage measures more than 160 cm in total (length plus width plus height), you must reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Tokaido Shinkansen.[6]

Arriving in Tokyo
The Shinkansen ends at Tokyo Station, which suits central hotels and onward long-distance trains. The Odakyu Line ends at Shinjuku, which is closer to hotels in western Tokyo. Save your hotel address offline and check the exit before you arrive, because large Tokyo stations can add a long walk with bags.
