Moving between the skyscrapers of Makati's business district and the historic heart of Manila is a short hop in distance but a long one in traffic. Whether you are heading to Intramuros for a dose of history or catching a flight, the choice usually comes down to a train along EDSA, a bus or a car.
Makati to Manila by Train
MRT-3 runs along EDSA with stations in Makati at Guadalupe, Buendia, Ayala and Magallanes, and ends at Taft Avenue in Pasay.[1] The operator, DOTr-MRT3, says the trains cover the whole line in about 30 minutes. On a regular weekday, trains start at 04:30 and the last train from Ayala southbound leaves at 22:55.[1]
At Taft Avenue, MRT-3 connects with the EDSA station of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1). From there LRT-1 runs north through Gil Puyat, Vito Cruz, Quirino, Pedro Gil and United Nations to Central Terminal, Carriedo and Doroteo Jose in the city of Manila.[2]
Makati to Manila by Bus
The EDSA Carousel bus service stops at EDSA Ayala (MRT) and runs to PITX, Pasay Rotonda and Cubao, which makes it a way to reach the south and north of the metro.[3] Buses from PITX also serve Quezon Avenue and Lawton, near Manila's old centre.[3]
Makati to Manila by Car or Taxi
For heavy luggage or a small group, a taxi, a ride-hailing app or a pre-booked car is the most direct option, because it takes you to the door without transfers. The time depends almost entirely on traffic, so ask the driver for an estimate for your hour of travel.
Tips for Traveling from Makati to Manila
- Account for Peak Hours: Manila is famous for its traffic, and a trip that is quick at mid-morning can take much longer in the afternoon rush. The train is not affected by road traffic.
- Keep Small Change: Carry Philippine pesos in small notes for buses and jeepneys.
- Luggage Considerations: Trains and buses are crowded at peak times, so a taxi is more practical with large suitcases.
