Tokyo to Kamakura by Train

The JR Yokosuka Line runs from Tokyo station to Kamakura without a change in about an hour. The Shonan-Shinjuku Line does the same from Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Day train  Japan

Take the JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo station to Kamakura. It runs through without a change and needs no reservation. In the October 2026 timetable a weekday local train leaves Tokyo at 11:36 and reaches Kamakura at 12:34,[1] while a train leaving Kamakura at 11:46 arrives in Tokyo at 12:39.[2]

From Shinjuku or Shibuya the Shonan-Shinjuku Line serves Kamakura on the same tracks. A train leaving Kamakura at 16:06 reaches Shibuya at 17:02 and Shinjuku at 17:08, so allow about an hour from either station.[3]

Which train to take

The weekday daytime timetable at Tokyo station shows four Yokosuka Line departures an hour.[4] Some of them end at Ofuna instead of Zushi or Kurihama, so board a train whose destination is Zushi or Kurihama, because those call at Kamakura. The Kamakura timetable shows two Shonan-Shinjuku Line departures an hour toward Shinjuku in the daytime, next to the Yokosuka Line trains for Tokyo.[5]

Kita-Kamakura is the stop three minutes before Kamakura, which suits the temples on the northern side of the town.[1]

Green Car

Most local and rapid trains on these lines pull a Green Car with unreserved seats, though some trains run without one. The surcharge comes on top of the basic fare: with Suica it is 750 yen up to 50 km and 1,000 yen up to 100 km, and paper tickets cost more.[6] The ticket machine shows the amount for your journey.

Reserved limited expresses to Ofuna

The Narita Express and the Odoriko both stop at Ofuna but not at Kamakura. Narita Express 14 leaves Tokyo at 11:46 and reaches Ofuna at 12:32, 46 minutes later.[7] The Odoriko also lists Ofuna among its stops.[8] From Ofuna, a local train covers the remaining two stops to Kamakura in six minutes.[1] This option adds a limited express charge and a change. It suits you if you want a reserved seat for the first part of the trip, since the local train from Tokyo takes 52 minutes to Ofuna.[1]

All ordinary-car seats on the Narita Express can be reserved, and a ticket without a seat assignment lets you use a vacant seat.[9]

How to book and pay

Local and rapid trains need no reservation. Touch in with an IC card such as Suica or PASMO, or buy a ticket at the station machines. Seat reservations for limited expresses can be made up to one month ahead through JR-EAST Train Reservation online, or at a JR EAST Travel Service Center, a JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-Madoguchi) or a reserved seat ticket vending machine.[9] A one way ticket from Tokyo to Kamakura costs 1,040 yen, or 1,034 yen with an IC card, at the fares in force since 14 March 2026.[10]

From Kamakura by Enoden

The Enoden is a separate private railway with its own tickets, running 10 km between Kamakura and Fujisawa through a tunnel and past sea views.[11] From Kamakura, Hase takes 5 minutes for 200 yen, Enoshima 23 minutes for 260 yen and Fujisawa 34 minutes for 310 yen.[11] Hase is the stop for the Great Buddha. The Hase timetable shows about four trains an hour in each direction.[12] You can change between Enoden and JR at Kamakura through a transfer gate, and nationwide IC cards work on the Enoden.[13]
