How to Get from Tokyo to Yokohama

Contents

The transition from the neon-soaked skyscrapers of Tokyo to the breezy, cosmopolitan charm of Yokohama is one of the most seamless journeys in Japan. Yokohama offers a more relaxed pace than Tokyo, with its historic port, the Minato Mirai waterfront and one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. For most travelers the trip is less an expedition than a quick hop between two urban personalities, whether for a seaside dinner or a visit to the Cup Noodles Museum.

Tips for Traveling from Tokyo to Yokohama

  • Station Navigation: Tokyo Station is massive, so give yourself time to find your platform, especially if you are navigating the station for the first time.
  • Luggage: The commuter trains on this route have no dedicated luggage storage. If you have large suitcases, keep them close to your seat or consider a luggage delivery service (Takkyubin) if you are moving hotels.
  • Peak Hours: Try to avoid the morning and evening rush hours, when the trains are extremely crowded with commuters.
  • Arrival Point: Yokohama Station is the main hub, but if you are heading straight to Minato Mirai or Chinatown, check whether a stop such as Sakuragicho or Ishikawacho is closer to your destination.
  • IC Cards: A Suica or Pasmo card is convenient for the commuter lines and for the local subways and buses once you arrive in Yokohama.
