Yokohama to Osaka is a classic Japan itinerary for travelers moving from the Tokyo Bay area to Kansai. The fastest and most convenient option for most visitors is the Tokaido Shinkansen from Shin-Yokohama Station, but you can also fly from Tokyo's Haneda Airport or save a night of accommodation on an overnight highway bus. Yokohama to Osaka by Shinkansen
Shin-Yokohama Station is the Shinkansen stop for Yokohama. The Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen runs three types of train: the Nozomi stops at the fewest stations and is the quickest to Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, while Hikari and Kodama stop more often.[1] The fastest Nozomi trains cover the distance from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka in 2 hours 21 minutes,[2] and Shin-Yokohama lies a little closer to Osaka than Tokyo does. Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station for Osaka; from there the Osaka Loop Line and the subway take you on to Umeda, Namba and the other districts.
Fares depend on the train type, the seat class and the travel season, so check the price in the JR booking systems or on smartEX when you book. During the major peak periods all Nozomi seats are reserved, and holders of non-reserved tickets can only stand in the passageway on a Nozomi, while Hikari and Kodama keep their non-reserved seats.[3]
Using a Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Hikari and Kodama trains but not on Nozomi trains. Pass holders can buy a separate NOZOMI MIZUHO ticket if they want to ride a Nozomi.[4]
Yokohama to Osaka by Flight
Flying means leaving from Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The Keikyu Line connects Yokohama Station with Haneda in about 30 minutes,[5] and Osaka is served by Itami Airport and Kansai International Airport. The flight itself is short, but the full journey takes longer: you still need to get to the airport, check in, pass security, collect your baggage and travel on from the Osaka airport to your hotel.
Since September 1, 2026, baggage check-in for domestic flights at Haneda closes 30 minutes before departure, and the security checkpoint closes 20 minutes before departure. JAL recommends arriving at the airport 1 hour before departure during busy holiday periods.[6] Check the airport names, baggage allowance and change rules shown when you book, particularly if you have a hotel or meeting soon after arrival.
Yokohama to Osaka by Overnight Bus
Overnight highway buses are the budget option and save you the cost of a night in a hotel. WILLER lists overnight fares from Yokohama to Osaka of roughly 2,800 to 8,400 yen depending on the service, seat type and date.[7] As an example, one overnight service calls at Shin-Yokohama Station (North Exit) at 22:40 and reaches Umeda in Osaka at 06:45 the next morning; the Prime seat (4 seats per row) cost 4,900 yen on the sample date.[7] Seats in the 3-across layouts cost more but give you more room.

Tips for Traveling from Yokohama to Osaka
- Book ahead in busy periods. Reserve your Shinkansen seat early around Golden Week, Obon and the New Year, when all Nozomi seats are reserved.
- Check which Osaka station you need. Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station; Umeda, Namba and Universal City are a short ride away by local train or subway.
- Check the departure point of the bus. Overnight buses leave from different stops in the Yokohama area, so confirm the stop and the arrival station before you book.
