Ba Na Hills: Golden Bridge, French Village and Cable Cars Above Da Nang

Perched at 1,487 meters above sea level in the Truong Son Mountains, Ba Na Hills is a sprawling hilltop resort that has transformed from a colonial-era French retreat into one of Vietnam's most visited attractions. The centerpiece - the Golden Bridge, a 150-meter walkway cradled by enormous stone hands emerging from the mountainside - has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Southeast Asia. But there is far more to Ba Na Hills than a single bridge.

The complex spans an entire mountain peak roughly 25 kilometers southwest of Da Nang. Getting there involves riding one of the world's longest cable car systems, which climbs over dense jungle canopy before depositing visitors into a surreal landscape of French colonial architecture, flower gardens, amusement rides, and Buddhist temples. A full visit easily fills five to six hours, and rushing through means missing half of what makes the place worth the trip.

Getting to Ba Na Hills from Da Nang

Ba Na Hills sits about 25 kilometers southwest of central Da Nang. The drive takes 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. There are several ways to get there:

• Grab or taxi: The most flexible option. A one-way ride from central Da Nang costs around 300,000 to 400,000 VND ($13 to $17). Arrange a return pickup or use Grab for the way back - taxis waiting at the park often charge more.
• Shuttle bus: Many hotels and tour agencies offer round-trip shuttle transfers for about 170,000 VND ($7) per person. Pickups typically start between 7:45 and 8:30 AM with returns around 4 PM.
• Private car: A return transfer with waiting time runs about 780,000 VND ($33) for up to three passengers - a good deal if you are traveling as a small group.
• Day tour from Hoi An: Ba Na Hills is about 65 kilometers from Hoi An. Many operators run combined day trips that include hotel pickup, the entrance ticket, and a guide.

Tickets and What They Include

The standard Ba Na Hills ticket costs 950,000 VND ($40) for adults and 750,000 VND ($32) for children between 1.0 and 1.4 meters tall. Children under 1.0 meter enter free. This single ticket covers:

The Cable Car System

The cable car network at Ba Na Hills holds multiple records and is an attraction in its own right. The Toc Tien line stretches 5,801 meters in a single span - one of the longest non-stop cable car routes in the world. The ride takes about 20 minutes each way and climbs from the base station through thick jungle, passing waterfalls and offering panoramic views of the coast and mountains.

There are several cable car lines connecting different zones of the resort. The main ones to know:

Cable cars operate daily from 7:30 AM. The last ride up is typically around 4:30 to 5:00 PM, though the system runs later for guests heading back down.

The Golden Bridge

The Golden Bridge sits at an elevation of about 1,414 meters, stretching 150 meters across the Thien Thai Garden area. Two massive stone hands - designed to look like ancient, weathered rock - appear to lift the golden walkway out of the forest canopy. The effect is striking from every angle, whether you are walking across it or photographing it from the gardens below.

The bridge gets crowded between 10 AM and 3 PM, especially on weekends and holidays. For photos without crowds of other visitors in every frame, arrive at the park when the cable cars start running at 7:30 AM and head directly to the bridge. Early morning also brings mist rolling through the mountains, which makes for dramatic photos. Late afternoon, after 3:30 PM, is another good window as tour groups begin leaving.

French Village

The French Village is a full-scale recreation of a European hilltop town, complete with cobblestone streets, a church, a town square, and buildings styled after French colonial architecture. It feels like stepping onto a film set. Cafes, restaurants, and shops line the streets, and there are regular live performances including music, dance shows, and street entertainment.

The village includes several themed zones. The most notable is the Beer Plaza, which hosts live music and serves local and imported beer. The architecture is detailed enough to be genuinely enjoyable to wander through, and the cool mountain air at this altitude makes walking around comfortable even during Da Nang's hot season.

Fantasy Park

Tucked inside what looks like a European castle, Fantasy Park is a large indoor amusement park included with your entry ticket. It features roller coasters, drop towers, bumper cars, a climbing wall, arcade games, a wax museum, and a dinosaur-themed section. Most rides are included in the ticket price, though some arcade games and special attractions require separate tokens.

Fantasy Park is particularly useful if you visit on a rainy day or need a break from the heat. It is family-friendly and has enough variety to keep children entertained for a couple of hours. The 4D cinema and the alpine coaster are highlights worth seeking out.

Linh Ung Pagoda and the Giant Buddha

At the highest point of Ba Na Hills sits Linh Ung Pagoda, a working Buddhist temple complex with a 27-meter tall white Sakyamuni Buddha statue visible from across the resort. The pagoda is a peaceful contrast to the rest of the park. The gardens surrounding it are quiet, and the views from the terrace extend across the mountains and down toward the coast.

This is one of three Linh Ung pagodas in the Da Nang area. The one at Ba Na Hills is the oldest, originally built during the French colonial period and later restored. It tends to be less crowded than other parts of the resort, especially in the afternoon.

Le Jardin D'Amour

Le Jardin D'Amour is a collection of nine themed gardens arranged on the mountainside below the French Village. Each garden has a different design - from classical European landscaping to whimsical topiary and flower beds. The gardens are well maintained and particularly photogenic during spring when the flowers are in full bloom.

The gardens connect to the Golden Bridge area via walking paths and the Debay cable car line. Walking through all nine gardens takes about 30 to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace and offers some of the best views of the surrounding mountains.

Tips for Visiting Ba Na Hills

• Arrive early: Gates open at 7:30 AM. The first cable car carries far fewer passengers, and you get the Golden Bridge and gardens nearly to yourself for the first hour. By 10 AM the park fills up considerably.
• Bring a light jacket: Temperatures at the summit are 5 to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than in Da Nang. Morning mist and occasional rain showers are common, so a light waterproof layer is useful.
• Wear comfortable shoes: The resort covers a large area with plenty of hills and stairs. Flip-flops are a poor choice for a full day here.
• Eat before the peak lunch rush: Restaurant queues get long between 11:30 AM and 1 PM. Either eat early, pack snacks, or try one of the smaller food stalls rather than the main restaurants.
• Plan your route: Head to the Golden Bridge first thing, then explore the gardens, visit the pagoda, wander through the French Village over lunch, and finish with Fantasy Park in the afternoon. This route follows the natural flow of the cable car system and avoids backtracking.
• Check the weather: Ba Na Hills sits in the clouds. Heavy fog can obscure views entirely. Clear mornings, especially during the dry season from February to September, give the best visibility. If your schedule is flexible, wait for a clear forecast before booking.
• Weekdays over weekends: Visitor numbers drop noticeably on weekdays. Vietnamese holidays and school breaks bring the biggest crowds.
