How to Get from Kyoto to Takayama

Leaving the refined geisha districts of Kyoto for the timber-framed streets of the Hida region feels like stepping into a different chapter of Japanese history. Takayama is known for its traditional architecture and its colorful festivals.^[1] The route takes you from the flat plains of Kansai into the mountains of the Japanese Alps.

There is no direct train from Kyoto to Takayama. The rail route changes at Nagoya, and a highway bus runs straight through on a few departures a day. Which one suits you depends on your budget, your luggage and whether you hold a Japan Rail Pass.

Kyoto to Takayama by Train

The train journey has 2 legs. First take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya, which takes about 33 minutes on Nozomi, 45 to 50 minutes on Hikari and about 1 hour on Kodama.^[2] At Nagoya, change to the JR Wide View Hida limited express to Takayama, which takes about 140 minutes.^[3] With the change, plan on roughly 3.5 to 4 hours in total.

Kyoto to Takayama by Bus

The Nohi Bus and Kintetsu Bus highway service between Kyoto and Takayama is the cheapest way to travel without changing. The published timetable lists 2 buses a day from Kyoto Station (Hachijoguchi), at 09:50 and 16:45, arriving in Takayama at 14:02 and 20:57, so the ride takes about 4 hours 12 minutes.^[8] The adult fare is 6,500 yen, all seats are reserved, reservations open 1 month before the travel date, and the buses have a toilet on board.^[8] Round-trip tickets are not sold on the bus. Bus services can change by season, so check the operator's timetable before you plan.

Kyoto to Takayama by Private Transfer

If you are traveling in a group or want door-to-door convenience, a private transfer is the most flexible option. It suits families with small children or travelers with heavy luggage. Booking platforms list a standard car for up to 3 passengers and minivans for 4 or 7 passengers, with a driving time of about 3 hours 40 minutes and prices of about $950 to $1,015 per vehicle (October 2026).^[9] The price covers the whole vehicle, and you can ask the driver for stops along the way.

Tips for Traveling from Kyoto to Takayama

• Book in Advance: Takayama is a major tourist destination, especially during the Takayama Festivals on April 14 and 15^[10] and October 9 and 10.^[11] Train seats and bus tickets are best reserved early around these dates.
• Bento Boxes: Before boarding at Kyoto or Nagoya station, look for the ekiben stalls. A station lunch box on the Hida line makes the mountain stretch more enjoyable.
