Osaka to Kagoshima by Train
The Shinkansen is the gold standard for Japanese domestic travel. Mizuho and Sakura trains run through from Shin-Osaka to Kagoshima-Chuo without a change, and the journey takes as little as 3 hours 41 minutes.[1] After the Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July 2026, the Kyushu Shinkansen between Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo reopened on 18 September 2026 with a revised timetable in which some trains are slower, so check the current times before you book.[2]
Seats, Passes and Luggage
You can reserve seats online through the smartEX service.[3] The Japan Rail Pass is not valid for any seat on Mizuho, so pass holders should choose Sakura.[4] If your luggage exceeds 160 cm in total dimensions, reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. This costs nothing extra.[5]
Osaka to Kagoshima by Flight
Flying is the alternative to the train. The flight from Osaka Itami to Kagoshima Airport takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.[6] Itami is much closer to central Osaka than Kansai International Airport, so factor in the transfer to the airport on top of the flight itself.
In Kagoshima, the airport bus to Kagoshima-Chuo Station takes about 38 minutes, runs roughly every 10 to 15 minutes and costs 1,500 yen for adults.[7]
