Leaving the snowy peaks and craft beer halls of Hokkaido for the neon-soaked skyline of Tokyo is a journey that spans the length of Northern Japan. While Sapporo feels like a sprawling frontier town with its wide boulevards and relaxed pace, Tokyo is a sensory explosion where tradition meets the hyper-modern. The route takes you from the agricultural heartland of the north, across the Tsugaru Strait and down into the Kanto Plain.

Hokkaido is an island separated from Honshu by sea, so most travelers fly and save their time for Tokyo neighborhoods like Shibuya or Asakusa. Several airlines serve the route, which gives you plenty of options whatever your budget or schedule.

Sapporo to Tokyo by Flight

Flying is by far the quickest way to travel between Sapporo and Tokyo, and with several airlines competing, fares stay accessible. You depart from New Chitose Airport (CTS), south of Sapporo, and the airport is worth arriving early for: New Chitose Airport Onsen on the 4th floor of the Domestic Terminal Building is open from 10:00 to 09:00 the next day.[1]

Skymark Airlines flies the route 8 times a day in each direction. In winter 2026, flights from Haneda to New Chitose leave between 06:45 and 20:30 and take 1 hour 35 minutes; flights back to Haneda leave New Chitose between 08:10 and 21:00 and take 1 hour 40 to 1 hour 45 minutes.[2] Flights land at Haneda Airport (HND), which is closer to the city center, or at Narita International Airport (NRT), which is further out. Peach, a low-cost carrier, flies between New Chitose and Narita.[3] You can compare these options and book your tickets on GoAsia.cc.

Economy Class Options

Most seats on this route are Economy Class, and prices change with how early you book and which airline you choose. Full-service airlines like ANA and JAL offer a high level of comfort, while low-cost carriers offer a no-frills experience that suits backpackers and travelers with light luggage. Japanese domestic flights are famously polite and punctual, even on a short hop. On a clear day, look out of the window on the right side of the plane as you approach Tokyo: Mount Fuji sometimes towers over the landscape.

By Train

The Hokkaido Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in about 4 hours, and the Hokuto limited express continues to Sapporo in about 3.5 hours.[4] It is a long day but a scenic one, with views over the Tsugaru Strait.

Tips for Traveling from Sapporo to Tokyo

  • Airport Access: The JR airport trains are the most reliable way between central Sapporo and New Chitose Airport. Between 09:00 and 16:00 six trains an hour make the run, and the fastest Special Rapid takes 33 minutes, a Rapid 37 minutes and a Semi-Rapid 43 minutes. IC cards such as Suica work on them.[5]
  • Choose Your Airport Wisely: If your hotel is in Ginza, Shinagawa or Shibuya, fly into Haneda to save time and money on the train into the city. Narita is a viable alternative if you are staying in Chiba or near Tokyo Station.
  • Winter Weather: Sapporo gets heavy snowfall. In winter, keep an eye on the weather reports, because flights can be delayed or cancelled for de-icing or runway clearing.
  • Luggage Considerations: If you are carrying ski gear from Hokkaido's resorts, check your airline's baggage policy before you book. Allowances differ between full-service and low-cost carriers.
  • Booking Ahead: The cheapest fares sell out weeks in advance, especially during peak periods like Golden Week or the Sapporo Snow Festival.
