How to Get from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang

Leaving behind the jagged limestone karsts and riverside bars of Vang Vieng for the golden temples and French colonial charm of Luang Prabang used to mean a long, stomach-churning journey through the mountains on Route 13, where the views were spectacular but motion sickness was almost guaranteed. Today the Laos-China Railway has turned that road trip into a short train ride.

The landscape between these two northern Laos hubs remains some of the most beautiful in Southeast Asia. As you move north, the flat river plains give way to dense jungle and towering peaks. The journey still offers a glimpse into the heart of the country, transitioning from the adventure-focused energy of Vang Vieng to the spiritual and cultural serenity of the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang.

Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang by Train

The Lao section of the Laos-China Railway runs 422.4 km from Boten to Vientiane and is designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h.^[1] Passenger services on the Lao section average 10 train pairs a day, with up to 12 at peak times (April 2026), and the number of passenger stations in Laos has grown from seven to ten.^[1] Travelers can book and manage tickets in the LCR Ticket app, which has a multilingual interface.^[1] The train is by far the quickest way between the two towns, and the timetable and fares change, so check the current schedule in the app before you plan your day.

China Railway's notice for international Laos-China trains allows 20 kg of baggage per adult, with each item up to 130 cm in total dimensions, and does not accept checked baggage.^[2] Check the LCR Ticket app for the rules that apply to domestic trains.
