United Airlines plans to expand its Japan network with new nonstop services from California to Okinawa and Osaka, both scheduled to begin on March 27, 2027.
The airline will fly between San Francisco International Airport and Okinawa’s Naha Airport three times a week with a Boeing 777-200ER. United says it will be the only U.S. airline offering a nonstop flight to Okinawa from the United States.
A separate daily service is planned between Los Angeles International Airport and Kansai International Airport, the main international gateway for Osaka, Kyoto and much of the Kansai region. United already serves Osaka from San Francisco and Guam; the Los Angeles route will give the carrier service to Osaka from two continental U.S. cities.
More direct options for western U.S. itineraries
The Okinawa flight creates a direct option for visitors heading to Naha and the islands of Okinawa without first changing planes in Tokyo, Osaka or another Asian hub. Travelers from other parts of the United States can connect through San Francisco, but should allow sufficient time for the airport connection when booking on separate tickets.
The Los Angeles–Kansai service offers another direct arrival point for trips focused on Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe or the wider Kansai region. It may also suit open-jaw itineraries: for example, arriving in Kansai and departing later from Tokyo after traveling across Japan by rail or domestic flight.

United says tickets are already available through its website and app. The announced Okinawa service is scheduled three times weekly rather than daily, so travelers should check the operating days before committing to accommodation, island-hopping flights or tours. Flight times, aircraft assignments and connection options can change before departure.
Both Japan routes remain subject to government approval, according to United. Travelers booking far ahead should review the carrier’s latest timetable and fare conditions, particularly before buying non-refundable onward travel.
