Japan’s Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Will Add Supreme Class Cabins in 2026

June 19, 2026

Travelers planning premium rail journeys in Japan will have a new option from autumn 2026. JR Central and JR West have announced that a new top-tier Supreme Class will be introduced on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, the bullet train corridor linking Tokyo with Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Hakata in Fukuoka.

The first Supreme Class product will be Supreme Class Cabin, a private-room style service scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. The operators say sales will start at 5:30 a.m. on September 15, 2026, through Express Reservation and Smart EX. The product will be ticketless, with boarding by EX reservation IC card, registered transport IC card or QR code; paper ticket pickup is not planned for this product.

What will Supreme Class offer?

Supreme Class sits above the existing Green Car. At launch, each eligible N700S 16-car train will have two private cabins: one two-person cabin in car 7 and one one-person cabin in car 10. Both cabins will have lockable electronic doors, reclining seats, a large table, luggage space, dedicated Wi-Fi and a tablet for adjusting lighting, air conditioning and announcements.

The official release also notes that passengers can unlock the cabin using the IC card or QR code used for boarding. The cabins are designed for privacy and comfort, which may appeal to travelers who want to work, rest, travel as a couple, or avoid the more open feel of ordinary and Green Car seating on long Shinkansen trips.

A second product, Supreme Class Seat, is planned during fiscal year 2027, meaning sometime between April 2027 and March 2028. That version is expected to be a semi-private seat in car 10, but detailed sales information and pricing will be announced separately.

Where and when will it run?

The service is planned for the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen between Tokyo and Hakata. JR Central and JR West say Supreme Class will be introduced gradually on N700S trains. As of October 2026, only around 12 train services per day in total, across both directions, are expected to operate with Supreme Class.

The operators say Supreme Class will appear on Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services, but the detailed train list will be announced later through the special site and reservation channels. For travelers, the key planning point is that Supreme Class will not be available on every bullet train at launch. If the cabin is important for a specific travel day, build your itinerary around the trains that actually offer it once schedules are published.

How much will it cost?

Supreme Class will be significantly more expensive than ordinary reserved seats or Green Car seats. The official fare examples for an adult one-way Nozomi trip in the regular season include:

  • Tokyo to Nagoya: from 32,440 yen for the one-person cabin via Express Reservation, or 46,840 yen for the two-person cabin product.
  • Tokyo to Shin-Osaka: from 42,100 yen for the one-person cabin via Express Reservation, or 60,500 yen for the two-person cabin product.
  • Tokyo to Hiroshima: from 59,640 yen for the one-person cabin via Express Reservation, or 86,240 yen for the two-person cabin product.
  • Tokyo to Hakata: from 63,620 yen for the one-person cabin via Express Reservation, or 90,220 yen for the two-person cabin product.

Smart EX fares are listed slightly higher in the official examples. For the two-person cabin, the person reserving the cabin pays the Supreme Class Cabin product price; a companion using the same cabin must still hold a valid ticket and limited express ticket for the same train.

Food, drink and onboard service

JR Central and JR West say Supreme Class passengers on Nozomi and Hikari trains will receive a welcome service with drinks and sweets once per person. Paid food and drink ordering will also be available from the cabin tablet on applicable services, with items delivered to the cabin by onboard staff.

There are important limits. The official release says onboard food and drink service may vary by train, section, operating conditions and whether onboard staff are present. Travelers should not assume full catering will be available on every Supreme Class journey, especially on shorter sectors or trains without the relevant onboard service.

What travelers should check before booking

  • Availability: initial rollout is limited, with only about 12 services per day in both directions at launch.
  • Booking channel: Supreme Class Cabin is planned as a ticketless product through Express Reservation and Smart EX.
  • Luggage: the cabin luggage space is described as suitable for a carry-on suitcase up to 55 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm. Travelers with oversized baggage should still check the separate Shinkansen oversized baggage rules.
  • Seat direction: official materials state the cabin seats do not rotate. Direction of travel may matter for passengers sensitive to facing backward.
  • Rail passes: the official release reviewed for this article does not confirm Japan Rail Pass coverage or surcharge rules for Supreme Class. Pass holders should check current JR pass conditions before relying on pass validity for this product.

For most visitors, ordinary reserved seats and Green Car will remain the practical choices on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen. Supreme Class is best understood as a limited, high-priced premium option for travelers who specifically want privacy, comfort and a more controlled space on one of Japan’s busiest rail corridors.
