Which train to take

  • Trains 9 and 10 (Uttarawithi). Train 9 leaves Bangkok at 18:40 and arrives at 07:15, train 10 leaves Chiang Mai at 18:20 and arrives at 06:30.[1][2] SRT sells first and second class sleeper berths on it and calls it the "Luxury Night Journey".[4]
  • Trains 13 and 14. Train 13 leaves Bangkok at 20:05 and arrives at 08:45 (12 hours 40 minutes), train 14 leaves Chiang Mai at 17:05 and arrives at 05:55 (12 hours 50 minutes).[1][2] They also carry first and second class sleepers.[5]
  • Trains 51 and 52 (express). Train 51 leaves Bangkok at 22:30 and arrives at 11:40, train 52 leaves Chiang Mai at 15:30 and arrives at 05:10.[1][2] These are the cheaper sleeper option, with second class sleepers and third class seats.[6]
  • Train 109 (rapid, northbound only). It leaves Bangkok at 14:15 and arrives at 04:00 the next day, 13 hours 45 minutes, the slowest of the group.[1]
  • Day trains 7 and 8, and 102. Train 7 runs 07:30 to 17:50 and train 8 runs 07:30 to 17:40, about 10 hours.[1][2] Rapid train 102 leaves Chiang Mai at 06:25 and arrives in Bangkok at 20:05.[2]

Classes, berths and fares

On train 9 a second class berth costs 938 baht in the upper position and 1,038 baht in the lower position for the full trip to Chiang Mai, per person.[7] First class costs 1,446 baht for an upper berth and 1,646 baht for a lower berth, and sole use of a first class cabin is the top of the range at 2,446 baht.[7] SRT describes first class as private cabins.[8] Fares on train 13 range from 310 to 1,946 baht, so its top price is lower than on train 9.[1]

Daytime and cheaper options are far lower. Train 7 costs 558 baht in an air-conditioned second class seat, and the lowest fares on rapid trains 109 and 102 are 230 baht.[1][2] Express train 51 is priced between 270 and 818 baht.[1]

How to book

For special express, express and rapid trains with reserved seats, SRT applies a sliding window since 30 April 2026: a trip covering at least 60 percent of the train's route can be bought up to 90 days ahead, a trip of 25 to 59 percent up to 30 days ahead, and a shorter trip one day ahead.[3] Bangkok to Chiang Mai is the full route, so the 90 day window applies. Tickets are sold at railway stations, by phone on 1690 around the clock, and through the D-Ticket website and the SRT D-Ticket app.[3]

If a train is full, D-Ticket members can join a waiting list. The system emails a booking code when a seat frees up, and you have 3 hours from that email to pay.[3] Booking platforms such as 12Go also sell seats on these trains.

Stations

Northern trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, not from the old Bangkok (Hua Lamphong) station.[6] SRT asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Wait at Exit Gate B, go through the ticket gate and take the escalator or lift to the platform on the second floor.[4] First class passengers on train 9 wait in the lounge, second class passengers at the waiting area by Gate B.[4]

Tickets are scanned only at Krung Thep Aphiwat, Don Mueang and Rangsit. You need the paper ticket, a PDF of it or the ticket in the D-Ticket app; a photo of a paper ticket is not accepted.[4] SRT also tells passengers on train 9 to bring an ID card or other proof of identity.[4] The main stops on the way are Ayutthaya, Phitsanulok, Den Chai and Lampang before Chiang Mai.[7]

On board

Train 9 is an air-conditioned trainset with power sockets, USB charging, a washbasin and toilet, a mirror, a reading light at the head of each berth, a touchscreen display, cup holders and space for large luggage.[1] It has 12 first and second class coaches, one extra first class coach and a dining car.[4] Train 13 has air-conditioning, fans, power sockets, a toilet, a washbasin and reading lights, and SRT lists a dining car with food and drink service.[1][5] Express train 51 lists fans, air-conditioning, power sockets, a toilet and reading lights.[1]
