Kyoto to Osaka by Train: Which Line to Take
JR Special Rapid takes 28 minutes from Kyoto Station to Osaka Station, the Shinkansen 13 to 14 minutes to Shin-Osaka, and Hankyu is the cheapest at 410 yen.
If you start at Kyoto Station and end at Osaka Station, take the JR Special Rapid. JR West lists 28 minutes for 42.8 km at a normal fare of 580 yen.[1] If you start in central Kyoto around Kawaramachi or end at Umeda, the Hankyu Kyoto Line is cheaper: 410 yen and 43 minutes between Kyoto-kawaramachi and Osaka-umeda, in the same JR West table (fiscal 2023 figures, so current fares may differ).[1]
The Tokaido Shinkansen is the fastest, but only for Kyoto to Shin-Osaka: 13 to 14 minutes in JR Central's March 2026 timetable.[2] Shin-Osaka is a separate station north of central Osaka, so the time saved is often spent changing trains. Which line fits depends mostly on where you start and end, so the stations matter more than the minutes.

JR Kyoto Line Special Rapid
The Special Rapid links Kyoto Station and Osaka Station with a published running time of 28 minutes.[1] It is an ordinary commuter train, so you need no seat reservation. Fares and running time are the JR West figures from fiscal 2023, and JR West does not publish a Special Rapid departure list on its English pages.
Tokaido Shinkansen
Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama all stop at Kyoto and Shin-Osaka in the timetable, for example 12:02 from Kyoto and 12:15 at Shin-Osaka.[2] During peak periods all Nozomi seats are reserved, while Hikari and Kodama keep non-reserved seats.[3] Reserved seats go on sale from 10:00 one month before departure.[3] A non-reserved Ordinary Car seat from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka costs 1,450 yen,[4] a reserved seat 2,670 yen on Hikari or Kodama and 2,880 yen on Nozomi.[5]
Hankyu Kyoto Line
On weekdays a Limited Express leaves Osaka-umeda every 10 minutes in the daytime.[6] The 10:00 departure reaches Kyoto-kawaramachi at 10:43 after stops at Juso, Awaji, Ibaraki-shi, Takatsuki-shi, Nagaoka-tenjin, Katsura and Karasuma.[7] Limited Express trains charge the regular fare only, with no additional charge.[8]
The optional PRiVACE reserved seating costs a flat 500 yen on trains of the Limited Express, Commuter Limited Express and Semi-Limited Express types, and sales open 14 days before boarding.[9]
Keihan Main Line
Keihan limited express trains run between Osaka and Kyoto without a transfer in about 50 minutes.[10] Between Yodoyabashi and Sanjo the JR West table gives 49.3 km, 430 yen and 50 minutes.[1] Keihan also states about 40 minutes from Kyobashi to Gion-shijo, and 54 minutes from Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi in the daytime.[11]
The Premium Car is reserved seating on limited express trains between Yodoyabashi and Demachiyanagi, with a supplement of 500 yen for the full distance.[11] IC cards such as ICOCA and Suica work at the gates, so no paper ticket is needed.[12]
Haruka and Thunderbird
These are airport and Hokuriku limited expresses that also stop in both cities, so use them only if the timing happens to fit. Haruka runs from Kansai Airport to Osaka, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto.[13] Thunderbird runs from Osaka toward Tsuruga, Kanazawa and Toyama.[14] Other limited expresses need a separate express ticket on top of a Haruka one-way ticket.[13]
Stations in Kyoto and Osaka
In Kyoto, JR and the Shinkansen use Kyoto Station in the south. Hankyu ends at Kyoto-kawaramachi and Keihan serves Gion-shijo, both in the central shopping and temple district, and Hankyu lists Keihan as a transfer at Kyoto-kawaramachi.[15] In Osaka, Osaka-umeda (Hankyu) sits beside Osaka Station in the Umeda area, while Keihan ends at Yodoyabashi on the Midosuji side, nearer the business district than Umeda. Shin-Osaka is where the Shinkansen stops.
How to book
The local lines need no booking: tap an IC card or buy a ticket at the gate. For the Shinkansen, reserve online or at JR counters and ticket machines, with seats released one month ahead.[3]
