Leaving the ramen stalls and neon lights of Fukuoka for the volcanic landscapes of Kagoshima feels like a transition from Japan's modern pulse to its soul. While Fukuoka is the gateway to Kyushu, Kagoshima sits at its southern end, guarded by the smoking peak of Sakurajima. This journey slices through the heart of the island, moving from urban sprawl to lush greenery and coastal views in remarkably little time.
The connection between these two cities is a testament to Japanese engineering. For most travelers the Shinkansen is the practical choice, because it runs from city center to city center, but a single daily flight also links the two airports.
Fukuoka to Kagoshima by Train
The Kyushu Shinkansen is the main way to make this trip. It departs from Hakata Station in the center of Fukuoka[1] and arrives at Kagoshima-Chuo Station, 288.9 km away on a line built for speeds of up to 260 km/h (160 mph).[2]
The journey takes about 1 hour 16 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes on the Mizuho, roughly 1 hour 24 minutes to 1 hour 38 minutes on the Sakura, and about 1 hour 46 minutes to 2 hours 12 minutes on the Tsubame, which stops at more stations along the way.[1] Through trains from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo leave roughly one to three times an hour during the day, and some additional Tsubame and Sakura services only run as far as Kumamoto, so check which train you board.[1]
For one adult in the regular season, a reserved standard seat costs ¥11,750[3] and an unreserved standard seat ¥11,420.[4] The operators list seasonal adjustments for off-peak, peak and super peak dates, so the price on your date can differ slightly.[3]
Standard and Unreserved Seating
Mizuho, Sakura and Tsubame all offer reserved and unreserved standard seats.[1] Unreserved seats are slightly cheaper but do not guarantee a specific spot; you simply find an open chair in an unreserved car. In peak periods the unreserved seats on these trains may be overcrowded,[5] so paying the small premium for a reserved seat is a good idea around holidays.
Green Car (First Class)
For more space and a quieter atmosphere, many trains have a Green Car. The regular-season fare for a reserved Green Car seat from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo is ¥15,410.[6] Not every train has one: some Sakura and Tsubame services run with Series 800 trains that have no Green Car, so check the seat type when you book.[7]
Fukuoka to Kagoshima by Flight
The train is generally more convenient because it connects city center to city center, but there is a direct flight for those already at the airport. In the Fukuoka Airport domestic timetable for 1 to 24 October 2026, the only Kagoshima flight is JAL 3653, leaving Fukuoka Airport (FUK) at 12:50 and landing at Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) at 13:40.[8] The return, JAL 3654, leaves Kagoshima at 12:05.[9] Kagoshima's tourism board gives the flight time as about 50 minutes.[10] Schedules change by season, so check JAL for dates after October.
Factor in the ground transport at both ends. Fukuoka Airport is only about six minutes from Hakata Station by subway.[11] In Kagoshima, buses run between the airport and Kagoshima-Chuo Station about every 10 to 15 minutes, take roughly 38 minutes and cost ¥1,500 for adults, with no reservation needed.[12] With only one flight a day, the Shinkansen is the more flexible option for most itineraries.

Tips for Traveling from Fukuoka to Kagoshima
- Station Navigation: In Fukuoka, the Shinkansen departs from Hakata Station.[1] Hakata is a massive hub with excellent shopping and dining, so arrive early to grab an 'ekiben' (station lunch box) for the ride.
- Luggage Rules: Baggage with total dimensions of 160 to 250 cm needs a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area, at no extra charge; without that reservation a 1,000 yen baggage fee applies.[13] Standard carry-on bags and medium suitcases fit on the overhead racks.
- Japan Rail Pass: The pass covers Sakura and Tsubame. Mizuho is not covered, but pass holders can buy a special ticket for ¥5,150 between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo.[14]
- Arrival in Kagoshima: Kagoshima-Chuo Station is the main transport hub. Tenmonkan is about 10 minutes away by road and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal about 15 minutes; the ferry crossing to Sakurajima takes about 15 minutes.[15] City trams charge a flat ¥200 per adult ride.[16]
