How to Get from Vientiane to Kunming

The journey from the riverside capital of Laos to Kunming, the 'City of Eternal Spring', is one of the most striking in Southeast Asia. Today a railway carves through the rugged karst mountains of northern Laos and southern Yunnan, passing through 167 tunnels along the whole line,^[1] and flights skip the mountains altogether, linking the relaxed Lao lifestyle with the vibrant culture of Yunnan province.

Choosing between the iron road and the sky depends on your priority: do you want to witness the engineering marvel of the railway as it ducks in and out of tunnels across northern Laos, or do you prefer to clear customs quickly and spend your afternoon wandering through Kunming's famous flower markets? Both options are efficient, but they offer vastly different perspectives on this cross-border corridor.

Vientiane to Kunming by Flight

Flying is the quickest way to bridge the gap between Vientiane and Kunming. If your schedule is tight or you prefer to skip the border checks of the land route, a flight is your best bet. Lao Airlines flies from Vientiane to Kunming,^[2] landing at Kunming Changshui International Airport, one of China's major regional hubs. Flights start from about 1 hour 25 minutes in the air; itineraries with a connection take much longer.^[3]

On booking platforms, flight tickets start at about $75 (October 2026).^[3] Flights depart throughout the day, from early morning to evening, which gives you more flexibility than the train.^[3]

Vientiane to Kunming by Train

The railway has changed travel between Laos and China, and the ride is a scenic experience in its own right. The through train leaves Vientiane Railway Station in the morning and runs through the northern Lao provinces of Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and Luang Namtha before crossing the border into Yunnan.^[4] It stops at Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Boten and Mohan on the way.^[5] The journey takes roughly 10 hours, including the border checks.^[1] On booking platforms, train tickets start at about $97 (October 2026).^[3]

Second Class Seat

Second class is the standard seat and the cheaper choice. The through train is an electric Fuxing/Lancang train with 6 second class cars, 1 first class car and 1 dining car.^[5] Large windows let you take in the dramatic scenery, though be prepared for frequent tunnels as the track cuts through the mountains. It is a great way to meet both locals and fellow travelers.

First Class Seat

Tips for Traveling from Vientiane to Kunming

• Visa Requirements: Check your Chinese visa before you book. Citizens of many European countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, according to the list published by China's National Immigration Administration.^[7] Holders of other passports should arrange a visa in advance.
• Currency: Once you cross the border, Lao kip will be difficult to exchange. Try to spend your kip in Vientiane or exchange it for Chinese yuan (CNY) before you depart. In Kunming, digital payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are everywhere, so it is helpful to have these apps set up and linked to an international card.
• Train Station Arrival: Vientiane Railway Station is outside the city center, so arrange a taxi or a ride-hailing app well before departure. Cross-border tickets bought online must be exchanged for a paper ticket before boarding, and you show it with your original passport at the station.^[6] The baggage allowance is 20 kg per adult, and each item may measure up to 130 cm in total dimensions.^[6]
