The journey from the French-influenced Lao capital to Jinghong, the main city of Xishuangbanna, is more than a border crossing; it is a transition between two distinct worlds. Until recently this route meant long bus rides over winding mountain passes. Today there is a through train on the Laos-China Railway, which makes it possible to travel from Vientiane to Jinghong in a single day.

Vientiane to Xishuangbanna by Train
The train is the most direct way to reach Jinghong from Vientiane. China Railway introduced an international through train between Vientiane and Kunming South in April 2023, with stops at Luang Prabang, Boten, Mohan and Xishuangbanna on the way.[1] The train is a "Fuxing" or "Lancang" electric train with a top speed of 160 km/h, 1 first class car and 6 second class cars.[1] The full journey to Kunming South was announced at 10 hours 30 minutes including border clearance, so Jinghong is reached some time before the end of the line.[1] Timetables have been adjusted since the launch, so check the current departure time when you buy your ticket.
Tickets
Tickets that start in Laos are sold on the LCR Ticket app and at designated windows at Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Muang Xay and Boten stations; cross-border tickets go on sale 15 days in advance.[2] A ticket bought online must be exchanged for a paper ticket before boarding, and you need your original passport and the paper ticket to enter the station.[2] Fares by class are shown in the app when you book.
Border formalities
The train uses a "two places, two inspections" procedure. Passengers get off with all their luggage at Boten on the Lao side and at Mohan on the Chinese side to clear exit and entry checks, and then re-board the train.[1] Each of the two checks takes about 1.5 hours, so border clearance takes about 3 hours in total.[1]
