India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train began operations on 17 July 2026 on the Jind–Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana. The 10-car trainset links Jind Junction, Gohana Junction and Sonipat, with intermediate stops across the roughly 90-kilometre route.

A pilot service with hydrogen fuel cells
Indian Railways describes the Jind–Sonipat operation as a pilot project. The train uses a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system and is approved for a maximum operating speed of 75 km/h. It has capacity for around 2,600 passengers, according to the government backgrounder.
Rather than relying on diesel traction, the train generates electricity on board through a hydrogen fuel-cell system; the stated by-products are water vapour and heat. A dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind, while technical staff are due to accompany the train during its initial operating phase.
For most international visitors, the service is best treated as a local rail experience or a practical connection within Haryana, not as a replacement for Delhi’s main intercity links.
