Planning for a proposed second high-speed rail corridor between Shenzhen and Guangzhou is moving forward, including research into a possible southern extension towards Hong Kong. It is not, however, a new train service that visitors can use yet.
Shenzhen’s public procurement platform confirmed in August 2025 that a planning and construction-scheme study for the southern extension of the Second Guangzhou–Shenzhen High-Speed Railway had been awarded. Shenzhen’s current 15th Five-Year Plan, published in July 2026, also lists the project among rail schemes for which preliminary work may be started at an appropriate time.
A long-term network project, not a confirmed route
The available official material supports the project’s planning status but does not confirm a final alignment, station list, train technology, fare structure or opening date. Published descriptions of the proposed line have varied, including reports of different possible speeds and airport connections. Those details should not be treated as settled.
A Shenzhen government page discussing the tender material said the extension was being studied from Airport East through Bao’an, Qianhai and Nanshan, with a possible connection towards Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis and Lantau. The same report noted that no formal plan had fixed the extension’s exact route or station locations.
Airport East is being developed as a future multimodal hub near Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. Shenzhen authorities say the wider hub is intended to integrate aviation, national rail, intercity rail and metro services, and that it is designed to accommodate the proposed second Guangzhou–Shenzhen line. That hub planning should not be confused with an approved railway timetable.
Current Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou rail options remain unchanged
There is no announced change to the existing Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link. The Hong Kong government lists shortest current journeys from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station at about 14 minutes to Futian, 18 minutes to Shenzhen North and 47 minutes to Guangzhou South, depending on the train selected.
Visitors travelling between Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou should continue to use the current High Speed Rail timetable and ticket channels, rather than plan an itinerary around the proposed second corridor. Cross-border travel requirements, including any visa or entry formalities that apply to an individual traveller, are also unchanged by this rail planning announcement.
What to watch next
The meaningful milestones will be a formally approved alignment, confirmed stations, a construction announcement and an operating timetable. Until those are published by the relevant mainland and Hong Kong authorities, reported journey times, a Hong Kong extension and any opening year remain provisional.
