Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal (Northern Bus Terminal) Bangkok: travel guide
Mo Chit 2, officially Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), is the largest of Bangkok's three long-distance bus terminals. It handles most buses to the north (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, Nan), the northeast (Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Ratchasima) and the Lao border, plus some services to the east and south. It is also called New Mo Chit, Northern Bus Terminal or Northern and Northeastern Bus Terminal. For Pattaya, Rayong and Trat use Ekkamai, and for most southern services use Sai Tai Mai.
Plans to move it have come and gone. In May 2026 the Ministry of Transport ruled out relocating the terminal and announced an upgrade instead, covered below.
Location and how to get there
The terminal is at 999 Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, Chatuchak, behind Queen Sirikit Park and next to the State Railway of Thailand compound. It is not directly at a station, which surprises many first-time visitors.
- BTS and MRT: The nearest stations are BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park. Wikipedia puts the walk or ride at about 2 km, so most people take a taxi, ride-hailing car, motorbike taxi or a city bus for the last stretch.
- City bus: Wikipedia lists BMTA routes 3 and 77 from the Chatuchak Park side, and a longer list (3, 5, 16, 49, 96, 104, 134, 136, 138, 145 and others) from the BTS side. Route 3 is the one most often named.
- Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal: The main railway station is about 1.5 km away. There is no direct link yet, but the government has budgeted a study for one (see below).
- Taxi: Taxis have separate arrival and departure pick-up points at the terminal.
Operators and destinations
The state-owned Transport Co. (the "999" buses) is the main operator, and private companies such as Nakhonchai Air also have counters inside. Transport Co's own timetable for Mo Chit 2 includes the departures below. Treat it as a sample, since the full schedule is much longer and changes.
| Destination | Sample departures | Fare (baht) |
|---|---|---|
| Chiang Mai | 07:25, 19:50 | 594 |
| Chiang Rai | 19:30 | 722 |
| Sukhothai | 18:10, 10:30, 19:30 | 400 to 427 |
| Uttaradit | 08:30, 21:00 | 461 |
| Nan | 20:00 | 567 |
| Khon Kaen | 08:00, 10:00, 11:00, 21:00 | 348 to 430 |
| Udon Thani | 20:30, 21:00 | 535 |
| Ubon Ratchathani | 09:30, 19:30 | 578 |
| Nakhon Ratchasima | 08:00 to 10:00, every 20 minutes | 209 |
| Trat | 07:30, 08:30 | 334 |
| Hat Yai | 06:25, 17:20 | 785 |
| Phuket | 06:45, 16:45, 18:00 | 715 |
| Krabi | 17:45 | 675 |
Transport Co also lists Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat departures from Mo Chit 2, but southern services are much more frequent from Sai Tai Mai. Nakhonchai Air runs its own services from Mo Chit 2 counters (Isan lines on the third floor, gates 25 and 26; northern lines on the first floor, gates 21 and 22).
Route guides: Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Bangkok to Chiang Rai, Bangkok to Sukhothai, Bangkok to Uttaradit, Bangkok to Phrae, Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok to Nong Khai, Bangkok to Trat, Bangkok to Hat Yai, Bangkok to Phuket, Bangkok to Krabi, Bangkok to Koh Samui, Bangkok to Koh Phangan, Bangkok to Trang and Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Tickets and facilities
- Layout: According to Transport Co, ticket counters for the central, northern and eastern regions are on the first floor, and counters for the northeast and other long-distance routes are on the third floor. The whole terminal is air-conditioned.
- Online: Transport Co sells tickets at tcl99web.transport.co.th. Nakhonchai Air sells its own tickets on nakhonchaiair.com.
- Food and shops: Food courts on the first and third floors, convenience stores and a massage and spa shop on the first floor.
- Left luggage: Transport Co lists a baggage deposit near the food court entrance on the fourth floor, open 05:00 to 22:00.
- Information: There is an information booth in the central waiting area that points you to the right counter and platform.
Relocation plans and the 2026 upgrade
The terminal sits on State Railway of Thailand land, and for years it was expected to move to make room for the railway's own redevelopment. Wikipedia notes that a 2017 meeting set a 2026 deadline, and in 2025 the Transport Ministry considered merging all three terminals into Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
That has changed. On 8 May 2026 the Bangkok Post reported that the ministry ruled out relocating Mo Chit 2. The cabinet approved the fiscal 2027 budget framework on 28 April 2026, which includes a rebuild and upgrade of about 3.5 billion baht (3,505.63 million, according to Naewna) for 2027 to 2029. The Transport Co. requested 351 million baht for fiscal 2027 for the terminal building and its air-conditioning, much of which is no longer working properly, and more than 20 million baht is set aside to design and study a seamless link to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. Vans and minibuses are also meant to be brought into the same area. The ministry says it will wait for the study before deciding the final approach, with implementation targeted for fiscal 2028.
In practice, this means the terminal stays where it is, but expect building work from 2027.
Tips
- Arrive early. Many northern and Isan services are overnight departures that leave from 18:00 to 21:30, and the terminal is large and busy.
- Check which counter you need. Nakhonchai Air's own station on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road is a separate private building, not inside Mo Chit 2.
- Peak holiday periods such as Songkran and New Year are very busy, so book ahead.
- If you want a train to the north, go to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal instead of Hua Lamphong.
